Pornography Use and Gender Relationships – The Negative Impact of Pornography Use

Porn is an adult-oriented film genre that portrays people engaging in explicit sexual activity. Pornographic movies, adult movies, or sexual videos films which present sexual subject matter to arouse and please the viewing audience. Pornographic movies usually contain erotic sexual content and often include highly erotic and/or nudity. The acts depicted in porn movies are sometimes violent and some contain no violence at all. Porn movies vary widely in theme, subjects, and content, but a common element among porn movies is the sexual act(s) depicted in the video. In some instances, porn is used to titillate a man’s ego while in other instances, porn is used to explore a persons sexual feelings and in some instances, people use porn as a means of expressing their love for their partner(s).

According to a widely-publicized source, pornography may contribute to increased sales of sex toys and sex enhancement drugs. This is a statement coming from the Family Research Institute at the University of Texas, which does not necessarily reflect the views of the entire institute. However, the percentage of sex toy buyers who also consume sex enhancement drugs is relatively small. This information comes as a result of a comprehensive study done on the purchase and usage of sex toys. The study found that a large majority of these sex toy users also regularly consume pornography. Further research is being done to determine whether the pornography may in fact enhance sexual satisfaction and libido.

A study was conducted in Canada, which suggests that pornography use may increase the rate of divorce. Researchers found that married men who use pornography at any time had a higher rate of divorce than married women who did not use this media. The reasons given by the divorced men for divorcing their wives were that they felt their wives were having an affair with someone else, they thought their wives did not care for them anymore, and they thought their wives had lost interest in them. Of those married men who did not divorce, researchers found that 6 percent of them used pornography at some point during their marriage.

Pornography is not only confined to men. It has been known to influence women too. A survey was conducted which inquired people from all walks of life-men, women, teens, and college students. They were asked if they considered watching porn on the Internet or to have sex while watching porn.

Most people who watched pornography considered it to be a healthy form of intimacy. When one was asked what they felt when they watched pornography, most of them said that it made them feel intimacy, sexual desire, and the arousal of their sexual parts. This is different from the results of a separate survey which had asked individuals to indicate if they felt intimacy, sexual desire, and an arousal of their genital parts when they watched pornography. About eighty percent of the participants indicated that they felt sexual desire, but this particular result was unrelated to pornography use.

What makes pornography use unhealthy intimacy? The results of the studies mentioned above indicate that loneliness and sexual loneliness are two probable causes of loneliness. Specifically, loneliness caused by pornography use can cause individuals to seek solace in a new man or woman. However, this leads to decreased libido and can actually increase the possibility of having erectile dysfunction or low sex drive.

Another probable cause of the increased rate of erectile dysfunction is that porn use leads to decreased sex drive. One of the researchers asked women who were married to men who used pornography about their sex lives; the results showed that many of them had little to no sex experience. The lack of sex drive can then lead to loneliness, anxiety, and depression. This causes a vicious cycle which can lead to the increase in porn use which causes a decrease in sex drive and so on.

Overall, it can be said that pornography can have a negative impact on gender relations, as well as intimacy. It has been established that there are many health risks involved in viewing pornography. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean that one will contract any particular disease or illness, it can certainly lead to negative relationship impacts like anxiety and depression. To avoid negative impact, one must learn to overcome porn addiction.
